ISO 9001:2026 Published – What Organizations Need to Know
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 9001:2026 – Quality management systems — Requirements on 16 September 2026.
ISO 9001:2026 is the sixth edition of the internationally recognized Quality Management Systems (QMS) standard and replaces ISO 9001:2015.
The new edition builds on the established ISO 9001 framework while introducing targeted updates intended to improve clarity, usability and relevance for organizations of different sizes, sectors and levels of maturity.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF ISO 9001:2026
• Clearer wording to support better understanding of requirements
• Stronger focus on leadership, quality culture and accountability
• Greater clarity in managing risks and opportunities
• A new Annex A to clarify key terms and the intent of requirements
• Improved alignment with other ISO management system standards
• Continued focus on customer satisfaction, process effectiveness and continual improvement
WHAT DOES ISO 9001:2026 MEAN FOR ISO 9001:2015 CERTIFIED ORGANIZATIONS?
Organizations currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 should begin understanding the new edition and evaluating how the updated requirements may affect their existing Quality Management System.
The transition should not be treated simply as a documentation revision. Organizations should review their existing processes, leadership practices, quality culture, risks and opportunities, quality objectives, performance monitoring, internal audits and management review arrangements.
ISO advises certified organizations to obtain applicable transition information and timelines from their certification body.
